A relaxed and pleasant city, Pemba is the capital of the province of Cabo Delgado, North Mozambique. The city hosts some wonderful arts and crafts markets.
Pemba is set on a peninsula overlooking the third largest bay in the world. The streets are pleasant to walk, while Wimbe beach is animated with restaurants and bars.
Pemba is the getaway to the amazing Quirimbas Archipelago with its 30-odd islands and the historical Ibo island, previously a major trading post for the Portuguese.
Established in 1904 by the Niassa Company, the city developed around the harbor and it was originally named Porto Amelia in tribute to the Queen of Portugal. It was renamed Pemba in 1975 when the Portuguese left the country.
