Mbuna Bay Retreat, lake Niassa

A haven for nature lovers, the lodge is located directly on the shores of Lake Niassa , also known as Lake Malawi, Africa’s third largest lake and home to more species of fish than any other lake in the world.

Despite its remote location, at about 15 km south of the Lago District's capital Metangula and a scenic two hours’ drive from Lichinga Airport, it is easily accessible.

With its long sandy beaches and rocky bays surrounded by pristine bush land interspersed with giant Baobab and Mango trees, Mbuna Bay offers you peace, tranquility and first class comfort in an authentic African environment.
Mbuna Bay is a true Eco Lodge observing high standards for sustainable tourism in Mozambique and has been recognized for its environmental practice and social responsibility.

Mbuna Bay comprises four luxurious wooden chalets located directly at the beach. They have been erected on stilts to cause minimal impact to the fragile nature of the dunes. Through their picture windows and from their private verandas all of the beach chalets offer an unhindered view of the lake and the bush countryside.

The two spacious earthen houses “Casa Branca” and “Embondeiro” each have their own private area on a quiet stretch of the beach away from the other chalets. These recently-completed structures are built entirely from mud and straw, so their thick white walls provide a pleasant balance between hot and cool temperatures. The sleeping area and en-suite bathrooms are tucked into the bush and “Embondeiro” even has an outside shower and a stone bath tub directly at the foot of a huge baobab tree, providing guests with complete privacy but full access to nature.

All rooms are equipped with a luxurious King size bed, crisp white linen, large walk-in mosquito nets and locally handcrafted furniture.

Mbuna Bay is entirely vegetarian and delights in exposing its guests to ever different taste sensations from all around the world. Menus are designed daily to celebrate the seasonal produce grown in the Lodge’s own organic kitchen gardens and farm and by many dedicated local village producers. At Mbuna Bay, using locally sourced produce is not just part of a trend but a commitment – both in philosophy and practice - to ethical food creation, enjoyment and sustainability.
To round off a meal, the Lodge offers a fine selection of quality wines, liqueurs and spirits.

A well-stocked library offers books of all genres – from crime stories to African history books. In the “Artes Nkholongue” craft shop guests can buy village made souvenirs or have an item specially crafted within a day or two.
Mbuna Bay lies within the range of all three Mozambican mobile cellphone providers. The lodge's private satellite internet can be used on request for free.

Responsible ecotourism

The development of the local community is one of the major aims of Mbuna Bay. Apart from creating employment opportunities, the lodge continuously offers various income-generating possibilities and has been implementing several projects in the areas of health, education, agriculture and community empowerment.
On an environmental level Mbuna Bay is dedicated to the conservation of the natural environment in a transparent ecological way. Arriving at the lodge guests find themselves surrounded by bush land – just as authentic as it has been for ages. Large solar systems provide electricity and hot water for all the houses and a large organic farm produces fruit and vegetables for the kitchen

A lovely and welcoming lodge located right on the stunning Mozambican shores of Lake Niassa. Relax on your private terrace observing birds, explore this incredibly beautiful part of Mozambique, enjoy Africa's feel.
